“In order to make progress, you need to use D&I data as an engine for change. One way to do that is to set goals.” -Siri Chilazi

Siri Chilazi is a Research Fellow at the Women and Public Policy Program at Harvard Kennedy School whose life’s work is to advance gender equality in the workplace through research and research translation. She operates at the intersection of academia and practice, both conducting research on how organizations can become more inclusive, and bringing those research insights to practitioners through speaking, training and workshops. As an advisor and scholar, Siri frequently collaborates with organizations ranging from start-ups to Fortune 500 companies and leading professional services firms in order to close gender gaps. She has presented at numerous conferences around the world, and her work frequently appears in various media outlets. We are honored to have her share her perspective on this episode.

This episode is an engaging two-way conversation based on the vast research experience Siri brings from Harvard, paired with her active involvement in speaking with organizational leaders on the reality of their progress for gender diversity. By understanding and taking action, these principles will help drive more women to be successful in the field of technology.

We cover:

  • Reveal that Unconscious Bias training is not as effective as you think

    • Real change is in the system

  • Approach Diversity and Inclusion as you would any part of your business

    • Use a data-driven rigorous, analytical approach

    • Gather data at all stages of the hiring funnel

    • Look for where the data starts to change

  • Benefits of Microsponsorship

    • Small ways to support each other immediately and informally

    • Great way to immediately take action

  • Goals for Organizations and Individuals to make change

    • Mechanism for accountability for change

    • Measuring the right things to impact the system

  • The impact of achieving Diversity for the business

    • Process is harder, but results are better

The main theme from all this is to move from standalone “best practices” to the “best evidence” of what really makes a change in the system. Find and use real metrics to allocate investment funds and efforts to the right places to influence change. Don’t just take an action because another company has done so. Make informed, data-driven decisions.
