Jossie Haines: Thriving in Tech Success Tips
Jossie Haines has been an engineering leader for some big brands and she brings some big success secrets on this podcast episode. After her time at Apple, Zynga, American Express, and Tile, Jossie applied her engineering approach to her career. She does a fabulous job laying them out in this episode. We start with the power of networking and discuss building your own personal board of directors. We pivot to the power of self care since we all know you can't lead others if you don't take care of yourself first. We leave with the hottest topic on building resilience, discuss the lemonade test, and most of all how to be brave, not perfect. Tune in and leave feeling ready to take on the world.
“ Take some time to be grateful for the things that went well this year. The little things. Take the time to celebrate those wins. Go forward that way. That is the positivity we need to build that resilience to keep going.” -Jossie Haines
Jossie Haines has been an engineering leader focused on large scale consumer technology at companies such as Apple, Zynga, American Express and Tile for 20 years. She is currently Sr Director of Platform & Web Engineering as well as head of diversity, equity & inclusion (DEI) at Tile.
She manages a team based in Vancouver, and leads the engineering efforts integrating the Tile technology into partner ecosystems including enabling Google Home devices to directly ring and locate Tiles, as well as partnering with Intel and HP to enable Intel based laptops to behave as Tiles with no additional hardware. She also manages the web team that handles all aspects of the tile.com e-commerce experience bringing in millions in yearly revenue.
Jossie shares the mission of Tech Diva Success to keep women in tech, and in her role as head of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) at Tile, she advocates for diversity and inclusion across the entire company at the executive team level, and sets the company’s annual DEI strategy and budget. She can be found often speaking on to empower women in tech, so we were happy to have her join us for the show.
Her first highlight is around building your network. We all know this is powerful, but she describes how this can help you get a new role. We also discuss why it is key to have a network of other women in technology careers to express our shared experiences which ultimately help us create a better space for women in tech. She shares some methods of tracking your networks that can be used for managing teams also and how to build a board of directors.
Then, we move into self care and introspection since we all know you can’t take care of others if you can’t take care of yourself. This includes relaxation, meditation, taking a walk, and really reflecting on your goals. These techniques can help us bridge the confidence gap and build stronger women in tech.
We leave the show with the most impactful tip around building resilience. Jossie shares a book recommendation with a link that can be found below and a great concept of being brave, but not perfect. It’s about getting outside your comfort zone and trying things for the experience. That is when we grow and learn. Sometimes it takes failure, but in that is the beauty of growth. Jossie shares the lemonade test story, so remember we need to start teaching girls young to stand in the power and be heard.
